  • Stay on your parents insurance policy. As a result of Obamacare, children can now stay on their parents policy until they reach the age of 26.
  • Check to see if your university offers a student health care plan. Often times you can even use student loans to pay your health insurance premium. However, these plans can be more restrictive than other health insurance policies.
  • If you are on a very tight budget, a catastrophic plan might be the way to go. This policy is meant for major emergencies and also covers three primary care visits per year. The deductible for these types of plans can be very high.
  • Obamacare brought a health exchange in which private insurers offer standardized plans. Medicaid has also been expanded and provides inexpensive health care to low income people.

How to Compare and Contrast Renter’s Insurance Policies

Posted on July 11th, 2015 by

Just because you don’t own a home, doesn’t mean you don’t need insurance. With some landlords, renter’s insurance is even mandatory. Before you commit to a policy though, you should compare the different coverages. These points should help you decide on coverage that’s right for you.

  • Pick at least 3 different companies in the lineup. This should give you a broad spectrum to choose from.
  • One of the most important items to compare is liability insurance. It covers you in case someone gets hurt in your home.
  • Compare whether the policies cover cash value of items or replacement costs. Cash value pays only the amount your valuables are worth in their depreciated state, replacement cost covers the amount needed to replace them.
  • Check to see if the policies cover additional living expenses. This type of coverage pays for hotel costs in case your home becomes uninhabitable.

Make an inventory list of valuables in your home and decide how much coverage you need. At Durkin Agency, our friendly agents are happy to to answer any questions you may have about renter’s insurance policies.

Posted on March 20th, 2015 by

Spring is almost here and you can’t wait to get out on the open road with your new motorcycle. You already have the helmet, goggles, jacket and gloves but before you get ready to head out it’s important to ensure you have the proper motorcycle insurance coverage.

  • Liability Insurance. While this type of insurance doesn’t protect you or your motorcycle, it does cover the other party in the event the accident was your fault.
  • Collision Insurance. This covers repairs to your motorcycle in case you caused the accident. Collision coverage only covers the book value of the motorcycle so discuss with your agent any additional riders needed if you have added after market accessories.
  • Comprehensive Coverage. In the case of fire, theft, vandalism and some natural disasters, comprehensive insurance will cover the loss. Just as with collision coverage, the book value of the bike, after your deductible, is all comprehensive insurance is responsible for covering.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Insurance. If you are hit by a motorist who either doesn’t have insurance or not enough coverage then this part of your policy will take over.

  • Check your windshield wipers. While they might be fine during the rainy season, typically traditional wipers work harder when they also have to deal with ice and snow.
  • Wax your headlights and taillights to make them even brighter. This can also help all the dirty road slush slide right off.
  • If you haven’t had your engine’s coolant flushed in a while, now is the perfect time to do it. Having your mechanic do a “flush and fill” will ensure your coolant level is correct and that you have no leaks.
  • Tires lose pressure during cold weather so get in the habit of checking yours on a regular basis.
  • Create a survival kit to keep in your car at all times. Pack up a space blanket for warmth, a whistle, a plastic container for melting snow, granola bars and a candle and lighter.

  • Before you enter your home, check out the structure of your home for signs of any damage. Get in touch with the appropriate professionals if you suspect that there is damage to your electric, water, gas, or sewer lines.
  • File your flood insurance claim as quickly as you can. Be sure to have important information ready, such as the name of the insurance company, the policy number, and a telephone number and email address where you can be reached. Take photos of all damages, and make a list of all damaged items.
  • Clean up quickly and thoroughly to prevent the growth of mold. Pull up water logged carpets, and remove any items that have been saturated with water. Clean and disinfect floors, walls, closets, and shelves. Afterwards dry out the interior of your home with the use of dehumidifiers.

Keep Your Home Safe From the Heavy Snowfall This Winter

Posted on February 27th, 2015 by

Winter is the most dangerous season for your home, and if you’re like most homeowners, you’re probably pretty worried with all of that snow coming down. However, that doesn’t mean you just need to resign yourself to some damage and pay the repair costs. There are things you can do to prevent that damage, or at the very least, minimize it. Use these home safety tips from Durkin Agency, Inc. to help.

  • Clean your gutters regularly. Gutters that get clogged with leaves, debris or even lots of snow can put extra weight on your home and roof, causing serious damage. Clean them out whenever possible to avoid problems or ask your gardener or landscaper to do it.
  • Never go up on your roof after it has snowed, and don’t send anybody up that isn’t familiar with safety protocols. If you need snow cleared off your roof, the job should be done by a licensed and bonded professional in your area. A snowy roof can be very dangerous.
  • Use a ladder and long scraping tool to clear some snow off the roof on your own.

Contact Durkin Agency, Inc. for more home safety tips you can use this winter season.
